Gas heated air curtains S&J, which covers central Indiana and eastern Illinois territories, will celebrate 50 years in its partnership with Berner this year, according to Steve Smith, principal. The company has been involved with several projects. One of the largest was the warehouse of a large, used car dealer where S&J sold dozens of Berner IDC-12 air curtains for the company’s car storage building. Another example was an industrial application that included direct-fired gas heated air curtains for a local auto manufacturing plant’s automobile access doorways. Indoor air comfort S&J always ranks among our top five reps, and last year they had a phenomenal 50 percent increase over 2017" “S&J always ranks among our top five reps, and last year they had a phenomenal 50 percent increase over 2017. They are our only HVAC rep that sells air curtains exclusively, therefore engineers in their territory think of S&J, Berner, and air curtains synonymously. They also have tremendous relationships with packaged HVAC system manufacturer reps that provide total HVAC solutions to industrial and commercial buildings.” — Michael Coscarelli, national sales manager, Berner. SRS Enterprises, which has won the top award five years in a row, designed a heated air curtain solution for the John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, that eliminated plumbing pipe freezing and promoted warmer indoor air comfort for a major entryway. Improving energy efficiency The air curtains saved the city hundreds of thousands of dollars versus potential entry construction renovation costs to remedy the problem, according to Charles Cino, sales rep, SRS Enterprises. The rep’s design team also innovated an unconventional but effective vertical installation of the four air curtains to solve over door access challenges. In another project, work at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital received several air curtains with hot water coils on loading dock doors to minimize winter air infiltration and improve energy efficiency. “SRS’ success is intentional with strong leadership and a fantastic group of employees dedicated to serving the New York market with HVAC solutions. The applications they specify and supply Berner air curtains for are very diversified and range anywhere from small pizza shops to international airports in size,” said Stephen Benes, sales manager, Berner.
The Revolvair™, the Air Curtain System for Revolving Doors, supports the expectation that lobbies are comfortable and welcoming. Berner International announces the Revolvair™ Air Curtain System for Revolving Doors. The RevolvAir™ allows buildings to meet the expectation that occupants can comfortably socialize, work, and hang out in the lobby. While revolving doors significantly reduce a building’s energy consumption, they are not ‘airtight’. The revolving door acts as an airlock, bringing in people, but also outside temperatures and fumes, into the lobby. When outdoor temperatures are extreme, the entrance of cold/hot air and fumes is quite noticeable. Overall energy consumption This ruins the ambiance of the space. When outside temperatures affect indoor temperatures, the HVAC system runs to compensate. In climates with temperature extremes, adding the RevolvAir™ over the revolving door works to negate the airlock effect. This keeps the lobby comfortable for those spending time in it. It also reduces the building’s overall energy consumption. Specifically-sized, the Revolvair™ will fit each revolving door’s diameter, configuration, and brand perfectly Specifically-sized, the Revolvair™ will fit each revolving door’s diameter, configuration, and brand perfectly. It blocks unwanted exterior air that gets trapped in the moving sections by creating a separating air barrier at the building’s conditioned interior. Therefore, lobby entrances are protected from outdoor air elements, infiltration of fumes and odors from the moving sections, as well as through the revolving door assembly’s gaskets and seal gaps. Building management system The Revolvair™ offers plenums in either concealed or aesthetically exposed configurations. These can also be installed within a bulkhead. Additionally, trim packages come standard in a white powder coating to blend in with the space. However, any hue from the RAL color chart is available as well as metal finishes, such as anodized aluminum or brushed stainless steel to aesthetically match the finishes of the revolving door. Berner’s patented Intelliswitch™ is one of the Revolvair’s™ unique features. This digital controller is designed exclusively for air curtain operation in commercial occupied spaces. The Intelliswitch™ can operate as a stand-alone air curtain controller or it can be interlocked with any building management system (BMS). It has a time clock, time delay, built-in thermostat, 10-speed fan control, and other integrated features so that end-users can customize their air curtain functions. Air curtain performance Electric heating utilizes Berner’s patented Venturi Heater, the efficient electric heater for air curtains The new ‘Berner APP’ wi-fi mobile application for smartphones can also monitor and program Intelliswitch™ functions. The air curtain can be activated by the revolving door manufacturer’s interlock, the BMS, or motion sensors. The 10-speed fan feature, facilitated by an energy-efficient 1/2-hp motor and direct-drive fan blower, is critical. It allows for the proper air curtain performance and balance of volume, velocity, and uniformity (VVU Balance). As there is no wind/air pressure difference for the system to overcome, the flexibility of the Intelliswitch™ allows for lower motor speeds. This, in turn, allows the system to provide enough CFM at the proper velocity to reach the threshold, without overdoing it, so that the air screen forms. Electric, steam, and hot water coils are available as heating options to improve the air comfort for employees and patrons near the revolving door. Additional heat offsets thermal losses within the door enclosure itself, as well. Electric heating utilizes Berner’s patented Venturi Heater, the efficient electric heater for air curtains. Lightweight modular sections Other RevolvAir™ features are: Factory assembled and tested, then shipped as easy-to-install, lightweight modular sections. These consist of the air curtain, transition plenum, and discharge plenum Utilizes many proven components, technologies and quality control practices used in Berner’s renowned Architectural Series Factory-mounted UL-listed control panel Proprietary, high-efficiency Pro-V Nozzle design strategically discharges air to meet the floor at the threshold or ‘break’ for a total air seal around the opening Intelliswitch is RoHS compliant Parts warranty is five years—ambient; two years—heated The Berner RevolvAir™ is the first air curtain system for revolving doors designed and engineered by a U.S. manufacturer.
The Berner App, a first-of-its-kind air curtain app to control architectural air curtains from a smartphone, is available now at the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The company also standardized its patented digital controller, the Intelliswitch™, across its product suite of air curtains in the Berner Architectural category. Easy To Use Air Curtain Operation Both the app and the roll-out of the Intelliswitch™ will serve to simplify and enhance the ease-of-use of air curtain operation everywhere. They have also given the capacity to more easily integrate technologies such as wireless controllers, apps, EC motors, and other capabilities into Berner air curtains. To further its commitment to manufacturing energy-efficient products, Berner added its patented Venturi Heater to all electric heated Architectural air curtains, with the exception of the Low-Profile series. Mobile Application The Berner Air Curtain App is the first mobile application to allow control of Berner air curtains from a smartphone. It allows users to program their Berner Air Curtain, change settings, and monitor usage. It is built to work with all five designs of Berner’s Architectural Series air curtains. The Berner air curtain app requires a built-in wireless controller to be ordered along with the air curtain itself. Authority Comments Berner air curtain app is variables friendly and can be used from smartphone to program and adjust its operation “The app makes operating a Berner air curtain easier than ever before as it makes programming lots of variables friendly and straightforward,” said Georgia Berner, CEO, Berner International. “The design of the Berner air curtain app was a clear choice for managing an air curtain, especially when you consider the physical location of the equipment.” “An air curtain is typically mounted above your head. So, an app you can use from your smartphone to program and adjust its operation means saving yourself any trouble of climbing up on a ladder,” said Philip Thomas, Mgr., Product Development, Berner International. Intelliswitch™ Offers Ultimate Simplicity Designed by Berner, this patented digital controller eliminates the need to figure out, select, and price various control packages as all the options are available on it. The IntelliswitchTM allows the end-user to program the air curtain using preset modes or a custom program. This makes it easy to match the air curtain performance to the application. This switch is now standard on all Berner Architectural Series air curtains. Venturi Heater & Energy Efficiency Designed and patented by Berner, the innovative Venturi Heater design improves heated air curtain efficiencies by up to 40 percent more than other methods. The Venturi Heater fits on the outside of the fan housing allowing air to be warmed without blocking the flow of the air stream. It elegantly solves the issue of having to either place the heating coil in the intake causing the temperature to drop a few degrees or in the outlet nozzle, causing the airstream to be disrupted.
