The recently concluded 2023 edition of ENLIT was held in Paris from November 28–30. Boasting 700 exhibitors and welcoming over 14,000 attendees, this conference has solidified its position as one of Europe's largest gatherings for industry professionals.

8 featured zones and pavilions

This dynamic platform facilitates crucial discussions on the pressing energy challenges facing not only Europe but the entire world.

The 8 featured zones and pavilions – Country Pavilions, EU Projects Zone, Innovators Zone, smartEn Pavilion, E-Mobility Zone, Energy Storage Zone, Power Generation, and ESMIG Pavilion (Smart Metering) offered a comprehensive exploration of the diverse facets of the energy landscape.

Spotlight on Grid Digitalization and Automation

Adding or replacing 80 million kilometers of grid transmission and distribution combined over the next two decades

At the heart of the discussions during ENLIT was the imperative need to upgrade the European electricity grid as the energy transition and electrification surge forward.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), utilities are confronted with the monumental task of adding or replacing 80 million kilometers of grid transmission and distribution combined over the next two decades globally. This, however, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Addressing the challenges

With an increasing number of renewable projects injecting power into an already congested grid, challenges related to load distribution, transmission, and storage intensify.

Compounding the complexity is the absence of a unified vision for the future grid system, as articulated by Devrim Celal, CEO of Kraken, "We have multiple views of what the future looks like, and that's the problem."

Exploring Communication Technologies

From LoRaWAN and NB-IoT to LTE-M, proprietary RF, and mioty, the diverse spectrum of communications technology options in the metering space is vast.

Mattias Carlsson, Berg Insight said, "I had the opportunity to speak with mioty which is an innovative software-based LPWAN protocol developed by the Fraunhofer Institute. Mioty distinguishes itself by employing telegram splitting as its central innovation."

mioty's merits

The conference highlighted mioty's merits, showcasing its high efficiency, scalability, flexibility, and mobility"

"The conference highlighted mioty's merits, showcasing its high efficiency, scalability, flexibility, and mobility. However, for most to achieve widespread adoption, it is imperative to strengthen the ecosystem comprising diverse stakeholders."

"At the forefront of promoting this groundbreaking technology is Diehl Metering, a large German metering solution company."

transformative change

"As Europe propels itself from rhetoric to reality in the realm of energy, ENLIT emerges not just as a conference but as a pivotal driver of transformative change."

"The challenges are immense, particularly for Europe but so is the collective resolve to build a sustainable, resilient, and interconnected energy future. I look forward to visiting ENLIT next year in Milan."
