Dixon Group was delighted to play a key role in the development of a new state-of-the-art £8.8m MRI suite at a Grimsby hospital which will improve patient experience, reduce waiting times and enable cancer patients to be diagnosed faster.
The expertise of Dixon Integrated Services – a specialist division of Dixon Group that provides mechanical and electrical design and installation for large commercial developments – helped ensure the project progressed to completion on time, even against the backdrop of working in the tighter restrictions of a pandemic.
Contract Info
The team was contracted by Hull-based development company Hobson & Porter to complete the mechanical installations over a nine-month period, starting last August and completing in May 2021, as the building progressed at The Diana Princess of Wales Hospital.
The contract included the installation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems (HVAC), medical gas piping, hot and cold water systems, processed chilled water systems, low-temperature hot water heating, and condensed steam energy systems.
Resources and timeframes
The new suite is home to two MRI scanners and is expected to improve and speed up the experience of patients Paul Pacitto, site manager for Dixon Integrated Services, said, “This was a really great project to be involved in, as are any contracts where you are working on NHS facilities. This project was a challenge given the complexity of some of the systems we were installing, the tight timeframes we faced to get our elements of the job completed, and the large number of other trades we were working alongside on site."
“At times we had up to 15 men on site as well as myself overseeing the work, especially in the early stages of installation, and were then able to reduce numbers gradually as the work neared completion.”
Dixon Group delighted to be chosen by construction specialists Hobson & Porter. The new suite is home to two brand new Philips MRI scanners and is expected to improve and speed up the experience of patients, as well as reducing waiting times, which will of course also potentially have a positive impact on treatment.
Partnering with Hobson & Porter
Kirk Dixon, Commercial Director at Dixon Group, said, “We were, of course, delighted to be chosen to partner Hobson & Porter who delivered many great developments and who we have worked with on numerous occasions, for this very important project. It is always special to work on the development of new NHS facilities and even more so to be awarded this contract last year when we had all as a country come to appreciate even more the great job the NHS does, and the need for new facilities to ensure people can access the tests and treatment they need quickly."
“To be part of a team which has developed and handed over a much-needed hospital facility like this – in the midst of a pandemic – has been wonderful and really uplifting for all involved."
Teamwork
Dixon team mentality and culture proved invaluable on this project as it took everyone pulling in the right direction Kirk continued, “I am very proud of our team who have once again demonstrated their ability to complete major works like this, with minimum fuss, but to the highest standard of organization, planning and performance. Our team mentality and culture proved invaluable on this project as it took everyone pulling in the right direction and as a team to complete this complex contract. The finished product is something that we are proud of."
“All plaudits need to go to Hobson & Porter’s management team, along with Paul from our team. They are the ones that have done whatever it takes to get the building completed.”
The £8.84m suite has been funded by the Department of Health and Social Care through emergency capital funding.
