The January 2023 issue of the Healthy Indoors Magazine contains an article on the IICRC’s new mold standard for IAQ professionals. The standard for remediation services serves as a guide to help professionals in their efforts to improve indoor air quality.

The information in the standard also benefits facilities managers looking to improve the safety of buildings under their supervision. The following is a summation of the IICRC and its new standard.

About the IICRC

The IICRC is an organization that develops standards for inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries

The IICRC is an organization that develops standards for inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. With accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the IICRC issues certifications in more than 20 different fields.

With approximately 49,000 Certified Technicians and 6,500 Certified Firms throughout 22 countries, the IICRC represents all of the industries it serves. It also works with regional and international trade groups.

New Mold Standard for IAQ Professionals

When working in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, the IICRC S520 Standard outlines the steps and measures for mold remediation. A procedure standard for the remediation of mold-damaged structures and contents is ANSI/IICRC S520.

ANSI/IICRC S520 Standard

The ANSI/IICRC S520 aims to bring together fundamental academic ideas with practical features. Likewise, it guides efforts of water damage restoration for specialists confronting ‘real-life’ mold remediation issues.

The creation of S520 occurred in cooperation between microbiologists and other scientists, public health experts, industrial hygienists, remediation contractors, and restoration service providers. In addition, the standard involved cleaning and restoration training schools and trade associations that support the professional restoration industry, as well as allied tradespeople and others with relevant professional and practical experience. The standard is intended for use by those working in the mold remediation industry.

Testing To Meet the New Mold Standard for IAQ Professionals

Testing is the first step in meeting the new mold standard for IAQ professionals

Testing is the first step in meeting the new mold standard for IAQ professionals. Therefore, WTI Pure Air Control offers several services and methods.

Building Health Check

The Building Health Check provides a thorough assessment of the indoor environment based on HVAC zones. It combines field and laboratory experiments to provide information on a building’s biological status and performance.

The Building Sciences and Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory carry out specific tests and analyzes during the examination. Photographic evidence is also a part of the process. Samples of the air and surfaces allow technicians to screen for germs, mold, and particles. Temperature, relative humidity, and wall moisture also get measured and recorded.

Building Health Check service may include:

  • Mold evaluations
  • Dust and allergen screening
  • Risk and contaminant source evaluations
  • Floor and wall moisture testing
  • Infrared thermography
  • Test and balance reporting
  • Temperature and humidity logging

After completion of an HVAC hygiene assessment, a thorough report is generated. If the discovery of the above-baseline IAQ problems occurs, the report offers recommendations for corrective action. It also describes the building’s circumstances. Infrared thermography, mold and bacteria characterization, and 24-hour turnaround time give building managers more options as well.

WTI Lab and the New Mold Standard for IAQ Professionals

Using the most advanced technology available, the WTI lab tests environmental samples

The lab at WTI is one of the top environmental laboratories in the world because of its distinctive combination of skilled personnel and a full range of analytical tools. Using the most advanced technology available, the WTI lab tests environmental samples.

The results make it possible to understand the indoor environment better. With results in hand, remediation with the new mold standard for IAQ professionals begins.

Cleaning and Restoration Services

After testing comes cleaning and disinfection. PURE-Decon is a collection of services used to clean HVAC equipment, and ductwork used for air conveyance. These approaches, as well as the DEP, meet the specific circumstances of the building type and use, as well as the HVAC system.

PURE-Decon services go much further than conventional disinfection. It accesses parts of the HVAC system and ambient environment not reached by topical cleaning.

PURE-Decon’s core equipment

PURE-Decon’s core equipment of electrostatic DEP sprayers and misters is very efficient. This is so that the disinfectant atomizes and pulls toward surfaces via an electric charge when applied. This enables the DEP particles to coat surfaces equally, particularly in places where typical spray and wipe techniques fall short. After the required settling period, no dangerous residues remain.
