Johnson Controls, the global pioneer in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, announced a significant expansion at its Holme heat pump and chiller facility in the region of Aarhus, Denmark. 

The development will allow the company to produce and test larger, high-capacity commercial and industrial heat pumps to meet growing demand from customers across the globe. The investment is expected to create over 100 new jobs and is scheduled for completion by early 2026.

Existing buildings will also be updated and upgraded with new display tools and technology

The investment will result in an additional 2300 square meters of production capacity and an 1800 square meter customer and test center including a state-of-the-art simulation of the customer environment. As part of the investment, existing buildings will also be modernized and upgraded with new production equipment and technology.

District heating and cooling

Klokkerholm added: “Heat pumps are a critical technology for the energy transition typically using a third of the energy of conventional heating systems while reducing carbon emissions."

"The investment allows us to advance our technology leadership in key vertical markets such as district heating and cooling, data centers, food and beverage, and life sciences, and support our customers as they scale up their sustainability initiatives.”

New EU regulations

Holme plant has custom Johnson Controls’ Sabroe-branded pumps and chillers as well as remanufactured

The Holme plant produces customized Johnson Controls’ Sabroe-branded heat pumps and chillers as well as remanufactured, aftermarket and marine spare parts. The technologies utilize ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants such as ammonia, CO2 or propane, compliant with new EU regulations coming into force from 2027 and 2030.

It supplies primarily to district heating and food and beverage customers and procures 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources further helping customers to meet their sustainability goals. 

Heating and refrigeration solutions

The plant was established by Thomas Sabroe in 1897 in Aarhus, and since then the compressor manufacturing has developed into a global brand providing cutting edge, sustainable heating and refrigeration solutions. It was acquired by Johnson Controls in 2005.

Johnson Controls will showcase its HVAC and refrigeration solutions at the Chillventa show in Nürnberg, Germany from Oct. 8-10. The exhibit will be located in Hall 7, Stand 7-240.
