Island Heating & Air Conditioning is a heating company in Oak Harbor, and they are often asked how to tell if a furnace or heat pump is working too hard. Here six signs that indicate the heating system is working too hard.

Carbon monoxide detector

  • Unusual Noises - One will learn the sounds the heating equipment produces over time. Whenever one hears a noise they have never heard before, that can indicate a serious problem. One should schedule a repair service immediately.
  • Strange Smells - The same goes for smells. If one notices an odor they have never experienced before, call in a professional. But keep in mind that the equipment should not produce any heavy smells at all. It is also a great idea to ensure a well-functioning carbon monoxide detector is working at all times for those leaks that one cannot smell.
  • Sudden Energy Bill Spikes - One should track their electricity bill on a monthly basis. This provides a picture of how heating affects energy consumption during the cold months. A sudden spike is a warning sign.
  • Uneven Heating - If one has a traditional non-zoned system, then heating should feel the same throughout the home. If it does not, there can be various issues related to pressure, the blower, ventilation and so on.
  • Overly Dry Air - The air will tend to be dryer in winter. If they suddenly experience excessive dry air and static electricity, however, that can indicate an issue with the humidity component of the unit.
  • Thermostat Wear - Thermostat wear can occur due to overuse, and if one is constantly adjusting the thermostat, there is a good chance they are overworking the entire system. Island Heating & Air Conditioning highly recommend investing in a smart thermostat instead.

If one is concerned that they are overworking the furnace or heat pump, Island Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to help. They also provide a full range of heating and cooling services throughout Oak Harbor and the surrounding region.
