The winter season is already here. Millions of homeowners will be using their home heating systems to enjoy a favorable and habitable indoor environment.

One of the dreaded experiences is switching on the heater only to find out that it is not working as expected. This may prompt one to make frantic efforts to repair their furnace. Here are some common repair signs to watch for so one can avoid a heater emergency.

Correct temperature settings

If the furnace is blowing as expected but no hot air is coming out, there could be a serious mechanical issue. The first area to check should be the thermostat as it may fail to capture the correct temperature settings. An additional cause of this problem is when the ductwork is blocked or when the air filter is dirty and clogged.

Nothing can be more nuisance than a heating system that produces unnecessarily loud noises

If the furnace is functioning but frequently switching on and off, one is a victim of short-cycling. Unfortunately, this could be an indication that the furnace is on its way to a complete malfunction. Two of the common causes of frequent cycling are clogs within the airflow system and a malfunctioning thermostat. Nothing can be more nuisance than a heating system that produces unnecessarily loud noises.

Air conditioner system

This could be an indication of a serious mechanical problem with the working parts of the furnace. A squeaking sound, for example, could indicate that the fans within the system are rotating on worn-out bearings. Additional noises, such as rambling, banging, and clanging, could indicate that the screws, which hold the air conditioner system in place, have loosened. The cold season is probably going to cause your energy bills to increase slightly.

If the costs are excessively high, however, the furnace is working overtime and consuming more power than necessary. Hire a professional to do a diagnostic inspection. People living in Anacortes, Coupeville, Greenbank, and Oak Harbor, Washington, can turn to Island Heating & Air Conditioning for furnace repairs, installations, and tune-ups. They also provide a full range of cooling services.
