A ductless HVAC system (or mini-split system) consists of an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air-handling unit (evaporator). Unlike the central air conditioning system, these units do not use ducts.

Mini-split systems pay for themselves over time. Here are 3 reasons why homeowners switch to ductless heating and cooling:

1) Increases energy efficiency

Inverter-driven compressors of ductless systems speed up and slow down based on the needs of the system

If users want a more efficient way to stay comfortable ductless air conditioning is ideal. It can help greatly reduce monthly energy bills. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption. And this waste leads to an increased energy bill and more stress on the HVAC system. Simply by removing the ducts, users end up with a more efficient system.

Also, a lot of energy is consumed during compressor start-up in traditional HVAC systems. Inverter-driven compressors of ductless systems speed up and slow down based on the needs of the system instead of shutting off entirely. Consequently, energy consumption is reduced.

2) Long lifespan and quiet operating noise

Central AC units are good for 12 to 15 years, whereas HVAC ductless split systems can last up to 20 years. Also, ductworks have more leaks and other breakdowns, which are costly and time-consuming to repair ductless AC. You won’t have to worry about cleaning ductwork or ceiling duct leaks as you do with traditional HVAC systems.

Leaks or debris in ductwork can cause whistling or banging sounds. Ductless systems are much more silent than traditional HVAC systems giving maximum comfort in a home.

3) Government rebates for energy efficiency upgrades

Canadian homeowners that purchase ENERGY STAR ductless models, may be eligible for rebates

Canadian homeowners that purchase ENERGY STAR ductless models, may be eligible for rebates that are offered by the Government of Canada to offset the cost of upgrading to new energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.

Where mini-splits work well

  • Houses with no existing ductwork

Ductless air conditioning doesn’t require ductwork and vents throughout the house.

  • The new space: garage apartments, attic rooms, “man caves”

The ductless air conditioner is easy to install and it can be used in areas where it is not feasible to install ductwork and in rooms without windows.

  • Creating independent temperature zones in different rooms

If users are constantly fighting with family over the thermostat, installing a mini-split system could be a solution.

  • Supporting a room with specific heating/cooling problems

If, for example, users have a small kitchen with a giant stove, this unit will eliminate the need to install new ductwork.

HVAC ductless systems

HVAC ductless systems are becoming increasingly popular among Canadian homeowners. To select the system which is suitable for your home among the available options, it’s important to check ductless HVAC reviews and request professional assistance.

If the system is the wrong size, the wall penetration isn’t sealed properly, or the electronics are mishandled, it won’t work properly. The cost of ductless air-conditioning installation varies by type of unit, cooling capacity, efficiency rating, and labor rate. Proper system sizing is critical to getting the touted benefits from a ductless system.
