Cairo Airport, the second busiest airport in Africa after that of Johannesburg, which serves more than 65 airlines, thanks to the addition of the new Terminal 2, will reach a capacity of over 30 million passengers a year.

With an increasing air traffic, the structure had even a greater need for the filtration of the outside air towards the inside, especially because of the pollution coming from planes and other ground vehicles operating close to the gate areas, in order to ensure the comfort of both passengers and airport operators.

High absorbent power

General Filter has been involved in the production of about 8,500 molecular cartridge filters

General Filter has been involved in the production of about 8,500 molecular cartridge filters, suitable for the filtration of the unburned hydrocarbons and gases deriving from the combustion of aviation fuel, and positioned on about 900 support plates for a total flow rate of 2,700,000 m3/h. The cartridges, constituted by a structure of AISI316 stainless steel, allow to replace the filtering material inside, called Coconut in this case, a natural charcoal with high absorbent power.

Although it was an out-of-standard product, longer in fact than the international standards, which required the strengthening of the support plates in order to prevent them from warping because of the heavy weight, the filters were delivered in record time, less than four weeks, during August.

Improving the filters performance

In order to improve the filters performance, other custom changes have been made, including the introduction of a septum in glassfiber (positioned where the air is coming out) in order to prevent the coal dust, which inevitably forms during the passage of air, from being released and therefore not to dirty the subsequent filters.

Moreover, the insertion of an opening in the bottom of the cartridge has allowed the easier replacement of the active carbon once exhausted.
