Representatives of the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH), the Federal Association of Bioenergy (BBE), the Industrial Association of House, Heating and Kitchen Technology (HKI) and the Central Association of Sanitary, Heating and Air Conditioning (ZVSHK) spoke to politics today at an event in the Reichstag in favor of a climate policy initiative for wood heating. The share of renewable energies in the heating market is currently around 14 percent.

65 percent of this comes from the thermal utilization of wood. “Renewable heat from wood can replace fossil fuels in existing buildings but also in the industrial sector. Furthermore, with a share of 130 TW / h in final energy consumption, wood is significantly higher than the share of wind power,” emphasized Artur Auernhammer, Member of the Bundestag and Chairman of the BBE Board of Directors.

Technically, wood heat can also be a useful addition to heat pumps or condensing technology in new buildings

The event, organized by the four associations, dealt in the presence of members of the German Bundestag with the immense potential of wood heating and its efficient use in the heating market. "Wood is produced sustainably in German forests, can be stored and, with the heating technology available today, can make a major contribution to reducing CO2 cleanly and efficiently," explained BDH General Manager Andreas Lücke.

It is therefore necessary, according to Lücke, for politics, industry, trade and science to discuss the role of wood heat in the future energy mix as part of a “national wood heat strategy”. Technically, wood heat can also be a useful addition to heat pumps or condensing technology in new buildings.

Christiane Wodtke, President of the HKI, supported this proposal. "Without affecting the sustainable management of the forests, the contribution of wood heat to the achievement of the climate goals 2030 and 2050 can be increased significantly."

Helmut Bramann, General Manager of the ZVSHK, emphasized the role of the trade in such a strategy: “In the trade we have the know-how to professionally install modern and efficient wood boilers and also single-room fireplaces. We are available as mediators and supporters of a national wood heating strategy.
