Amidst an unyielding heatwave enveloping a significant portion of America, including California, EPIC-FSC is redoubling its efforts to protect the community of Calabasas from the ongoing wildfire season exacerbated by current scorching temperatures.

The nonprofit organization, created by locals after the Woolsey fire, is urging all 8,400 Calabasas homeowners to schedule a complimentary home hardening assessment immediately by emailing briancameron@epic-fsc.com. Home hardening is one-way residents can safeguard their homes and the community in the face of prolonged heatwave warnings.

Current wildfire situation

The current wildfire situation has been deemed particularly perilous by forecasters. Wade Crowfoot, the secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency, has raised grave concerns as multiple blazes have already erupted across the Golden State.

As we get deeper into the summer and vegetation that grew up during the wet spring dries out, we are seeing an uptick in wildfire activity,” Crowfoot said before issuing a stark warning at a recent media briefing. "Global climate change is 'supercharging' these heatwaves, pioneering to intensified risks for wildfires."

Core mission of EPIC-FSC

Calabasas, known for its breathtaking landscapes and unique habitat, lies within the Mediterranean Scrub biome, which is found only in five regions globally, including Southern California. Sadly, this picturesque biome is now at risk due to the escalating threat of wildfires fueled by heatwaves.

EPIC-FSC's core mission is to protect the unique habitat of Calabasas and its neighboring communities, saving human life and existing structures in the event of a wildfire.

"We are firmly committed to safeguarding all members of our community but need residents to do their part by booking a home hardening assessment, now," emphasized EPIC-FSC President Brian Cameron.

He adds, "Through collaboration with expert partners and the implementation of our comprehensive strategy, we strive to enhance resilience and preparedness against the dual threats of extreme heat and wildfires."

ECHO program

The organization's strategy, developed in collaboration with CalFire and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains, is empowering residents with tools and knowledge designed to reduce and manage wildfire risks. Trained EPIC members conduct home hardening assessments, guiding residents in fortifying their homes against wildfires by creating defensible spaces and fortifying structures to limit fire spread.

EPIC-FSC has also introduced the Emergency Communication for Home Occupants (ECHO) program, facilitating radio communication among household clusters to enable residents to stay connected and informed during and after incidents.
