Any home is more than just four walls, it equates to security and comfort for everyone in the family. When the outdoor temperature soars, people want to escape to a cool dwelling space. However, like all things mechanical, all air conditioning systems are prone to malfunction without routine maintenance.

If an air conditioner has stopped working properly, residents can try these DIY tips to troubleshoot potential issues.

Thermostat malfunctioning issues

If the temperature in the house is too warm, the thermostat might be at fault. The thermostat will display two temperatures, setpoint and room. The setpoint is the desired temperature and the room is the temperature of the space. When the room temperature rises to the setpoint, the thermostat is supposed to send a signal to the AC system to drop the temperature.

If the home is warmer than it should be, the thermostat may not be communicating with the AC as it should be. Residents can try the following tips to self-diagnose the issue:

  • Calibrate the thermostat - Residents need to consult the user manual for instructions, as every thermostat is different.
  • Check the connections - Remove the cover to expose the wire connections. If something looks disconnected, consult the user manual or contact maintenance team.
  • Check the battery - Some thermostats are battery operated. When the battery dies, the display will go blank. The solution is simple, just replace the battery.

Replacing clogged air filters

Sometimes an air conditioner problem can be fixed by simply changing the air filter

Sometimes an air conditioner problem can be fixed by simply changing the air filter. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, compromising the comfort of the home. It can also damage the central air unit.

As a general rule, residents should replace the filter in the HVAC unit every 30 to 90 days.

Ensuring unobstructed vents

Residents should make sure that all the return and supply vents are unobstructed. Furniture, rugs and drapes are common culprits of blocked vents.

In case the breakers trip, residents need to locate the home’s main electrical panel. Hopefully, the breaker switches are clearly labeled. If the breakers to the AC unit tripped, switch them back to the ‘on’ position. If residents are still experiencing AC problems, call Bob's Heating & Air Conditioning to get the AC unit working optimally again.
