Buildings are responsible for more than 30 percent of global energy consumption. Fifty percent of the energy demand in buildings currently is accounted for by heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that these sites are energy efficient.

At ISH 2023, the world’s renowned trade fair for water, heat and air conditioning, ABB will showcase modern solutions for automation within smart buildings. These solutions will help to increase the buildings’ efficiency and save significant amounts of energy.

ABB HVAC variable speed drives

ABB HVAC variable speed drives ensure an energy-efficient and safe environment in commercial and residential buildings, as well as other infrastructure.

These devices enable up to 60% energy savings by adjusting the motor speed of fans, pumps, and compressors, to provide optimal control based on the current load and needs of the building.

ACH480 and ACH580 HVAC drive series

The ACH480 and ACH580 HVAC drive series utilize embedded connectivity and protocols

The ACH480 and ACH580 HVAC drive series utilize embedded connectivity and protocols for simple, decentralized integration of building management systems and programming for lower cost OEM solutions.

Currently, these drives can control up to 16 ABB Baldor-Reliance® EC Titanium™ high-efficiency motors in fan wall or air handling units. This allows them to run the most efficient partial load multi-motor solutions with increased redundancy and reparability.

ABB’s ACH580 new wall-mounted variant with a high IP66 enclosure class will be available for more demanding outdoor environments.

Featuring ultra-low harmonics active front-end technology

The return on investment of AC drives can be further improved by using the ultra-low harmonics variant of the ACH580. The ultra-low harmonics active front-end technology makes it the cleanest drive for main supply networks, ensuring stable network operation and power quality.

This is important for sites with sensitive electronic equipment, such as data centers and hospitals. It also becomes possible to use smaller transformers, generators, and cables, which optimizes electrical design and use of space, and enables building service managers to save capital and operational costs.

Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium motor

For compact HVAC systems, ABB offers a highly efficient Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium motor with an integrated speed controller. This compact motor combines SynRM motors with permanent magnet technology to achieve high efficiency across systems over a wide speed and load range.

Thanks to its advanced technology, the motor even exceeds the IE5 efficiency standard. Remote programming and condition monitoring are possible, and storage protection and protection class IP55 are standard.

Buildings must be able to quickly adapt to changes depending on their use, the time of day and the weather. Much of the energy savings in smart buildings come from the system’s level of control and flexibility.

Automation and control solutions from ABB

Automation and control solutions from ABB ensure buildings’ safe, energy-efficient operation

Automation and control solutions from ABB ensure buildings’ safe, energy-efficient operation through smart monitoring at all levels – both on-site and remotely. This way, people can feel comfortable and enjoy the highest level of security.

ABB’s AC500 programmable logic controller (PLC) platform enables the energy-efficient management of buildings via closely linked networks and protocols.

AC500 programmable logic controller (PLC) platform

The AC500 PLC is a freely programmable platform that can be used in a smart building either as a central unit or as a connection between the building management system and the central, floor-related, or room-related functions.

A monitoring system based on the AC500 can support energy management for an entire building, including solar panels and charging stations in parking lots. With the integrated solution, both maintenance and energy consumption costs can be reduced. As an open communication platform, the AC500 can be securely connected to building management systems or field devices via different protocols.

ClimaECO - ABB’s integrated automation solution

ClimaECO is ABB’s integrated automation solution for HVAC in residential and commercial buildings based on the proven ABB i-bus KNX system. The solution seamlessly integrates room automation, power distribution and primary HVAC systems into one KNX system.

This saves time and effort during planning, integration and maintenance, while increasing a building’s energy efficiency by up to 30%. This clearly displays how ClimaECO makes buildings more economical, sustainable, and comfortable.

ABB Cylon

As an open protocol solution, the control of ABB Cylon supports the interplay between different components. For example, HVAC technology, lighting, and shading control, as well as emergency lighting and security functionalities can be combined via ABB Cylon.

Through the addition of real-time information on the condition of the building, a powerful energy management system can be implemented.
