When it comes to refrigerated food, nobody understands the essence of time more than the amazing Thermo King dealers. So, when Feeding America Food Banks called for help to move - and save, a large quantity of fresh produce, dairy, and other perishable products available from Walmart Distribution Centers and the Dairy Industry, a dozen We Move Food partner dealers raised their hands to help.
“The only way for Feeding America to take advantage of this opportunity was to secure additional onsite refrigerated storage for their community food banks. In true Thermo King fashion, a dozen came through to help, working directly with their local food banks to get them what was needed,” said Stephanie Moncada, Communications Leader for Thermo King Americas.
demand for perishable foods
The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented demand for perishable foods - U.S. grocery sales are up 80-200 percent compared to last year. This means there is a very limited surplus of supply to give to food banks - food donations have declined by nearly 60 percent in recent weeks.
“So taking advantage of the Walmart and Dairy Industry donation was an opportunity that Feeding America’s network really needed to capitalize on,” said Stephanie, “and our We Move Food program dealers stepped up once again." To put a value on what a refrigerated trailer offers a food bank, consider this: just one 53-foot refrigerated trailer can hold approximately 40,000 pounds of fresh food.
