A total of 14 associations from the field of technical building equipment (TGA) have presented an updated version of the position paper on Building Information Modeling (BIM).

In the paper, last published in January 2018, with the title, ‘Electronic product data exchange in technical building equipment (TGA) and its integration in Building Information Modeling (BIM)’, the authors formulate two key requirements:

  • Electronic product data are used worldwide. Therefore, the German standard VDI 3805 is to be transferred to the international standard EN ISO 16757.
  • Use of project data in so-called OPEN BIM models: The Open BIM approach enables the import and export of data using appropriate software, according to an open information model agreed in the project. Software from different manufacturers can be used for this purpose.

BIM working method

The advantages of the BIM method are the high quality, timeliness and transparency of project information"

The BIM working method considers the entire life cycle of a building from planning, through construction and operation to dismantling. The technical building equipment is also part of the consideration.

The advantages of the BIM method are the high quality, timeliness and transparency of project information. This leads to greater security in terms of costs, deadlines and sustainability in processing and thus to greater planning security,” explains Ralf Kiryk, BIM Project Manager at BDH (Federation of German Heating Industry).

One data format prepared and maintained

There are also advantages for manufacturers. As a result of the standardization work, only one data format has to be prepared and maintained. This minimizes the effort required for data provision and conversion into special formats for a large number of target systems.
