RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminum producers, has become the first company to accomplish the Green Power Aluminium certification procedures.
The evaluation team from the China Non-ferrous Metal Industry Association (CNIA) Green Product Certification Center, led by Mr. Ma Cunzhun, head of the Green Product Evaluation Center, embarked on their first international certification visit. The goal was to assess RUSAL, one of the largest aluminum producers globally.
Introducing innovative approaches
Two major smelters, the Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter (KrAZ) and the Bratsk Aluminium Smelter (BrAZ), each with production capacities exceeding 1 million tons per year, and the Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter (IrkAZ) with production capacities 425 thousand tons per year, were certified by the delegation. Compliance with the regulatory standards set by the Green Power Aluminium initiative was confirmed at certified facilities.
“RUSAL has become the first international company to receive the Green Power Aluminum certificate, confirming the status of a global leader in the low-carbon aluminum production. Chinese experts have recognized the compliance of our metal with the highest industry standards. The RUSAL's Taishet and Sayanogorsk aluminum smelters are also in the certification process. Our goal is to expand cooperation with our Chinese partners by introducing innovative approaches and sustainable practices throughout the whole value chain," said RUSAL representative.
Traceable carbon footprint
The Green Power Aluminum certificate emphasizes the importance of using renewable energy sources
"We are pleased to see RUSAL among the producers of "green" aluminum and confirm the company's compliance with our values. As the world's leading producer of winged metal, the company plays a crucial role in the development of the global environmentally friendly aluminum industry. After evaluation and certification, the company can offer low-carbon aluminum with a clearly traceable carbon footprint to Chinese consumers.”
“We hope that RUSAL will pay great attention to the Chinese market and expand cooperation with us and other companies in the industry. Together, we can enhance the promotion of green aluminum, facilitate its wide application and take advantage of the Chinese market, making a joint contribution to the environmentally friendly and low-carbon transformation of the economy and the qualitative development of China," said Ma Cunzhun, head of the Green Product Evaluation Center of CNIA.
Renewable energy sources
The Green Power Aluminum certificate emphasizes the importance of using renewable energy sources (solar, hydro, wind and geothermal) in the production of primary metal.
RUSAL receives more than 99% of the electricity for metal production from renewable sources. The certification process itself takes place in two stages: a remote analysis based on the information provided, and then an expert assessment directly at the production sites.
