There was no initial spark for the heating transition in 2018 either. That is the central result of the annual balance of the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH). The manufacturers organized in the BDH were able to achieve an overall increase of 3 percent compared to the previous year with 732,000 heat generators sold.

However, this increase results exclusively from the still dynamic new construction business. “Around 600,000 devices were refurbished last year. With around 12 million obsolete systems in stock, the current modernization rate is too low. Here politicians must finally set incentives to mobilize the abundant private capital for climate protection,” says BDH President Uwe Glock.

Gas Condensing Technology

Modern gas condensing technology was again the technology most in demand with 492,500 units sold and an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year. As in the previous year, heat pumps landed in second place in the sales statistics with 84,000 units sold and an increase of 8 percent.

This is followed by oil condensing technology with 58,500 units and a slightly downward trend with a minus of 3 percent. The development of systems based on biomass was unsatisfactory with 24,000 units sold and a decline of 9 percent.

Digitized Heating Technology

In addition to the market figures, the BDH also published the results of its annual multi-snapshot. Overall, the 104 companies organized in the BDH with around 75,500 employees achieved a worldwide turnover of 15.1 billion euros.

The manufacturers invested 680 million euros in research and development, once again proof of the high level of innovation in the heating industry. “The development took place primarily in the area of digitization. Digitized and networked heating technology will be one of the defining topics at ISH 2019," says BDH Managing Director Andreas Lücke.
